Sheikh Tappeh Forest Park

Covering an area of 44 hectares of highlands overlooking southwest Urmia, Sheikh Forest Park is situated near Sheikh Tappeh (the Sheikh Hill), part of the ancient hill range dating back to the pre-Zoroastrian time during the Medes dynasty. The hill range, unfortunately, has not survived urban development’s construction projects.

One of the major features of these hills is the seven distinct geological strata of the earth, each dated back to a different historical period distinguished from each other by different types of pots and pans and miscellaneous objects discovered inside. The arrangements of the strata are homogenous in most of hills.

The municipal action plan for the development of this park includes expansion of green lands as well as building a cultural, tourist and exhibit complex as part of the attempt to promote the park as a tourist attraction. The first step to this aim was to demarcate the ecologic boundaries of the park based on tectonic features of the earth. As a result, the two main borderlines marking the total ecologic area of the highest hill next to the park have been added to the park, thus expanding the total area to 260 hectares.
