Shalmash Waterfal

Shalmash Waterfall is one of the major waterfalls in the Zab Basin on the course of the Shalmash River, which flows into the Zab River itself. The river runs exactly on top of the peripheral fault in Alaman and Shalmash villages.

The Shalmash Waterfall was registered as a special tourist site after the government cabinet’s trip to the West Azerbaijan province. Construction projects for building hotels and tourist accommodations are set to be carried out in the area to facilitate the visitors.

Shalmash Waterfall is one of the most important waterfalls among the tourist attractions of the province. It consists of three consecutive waterfalls, the first one of which is near the tourist stop and the parking area. However, to see the next two waterfalls visitors have to trek a relatively long trail down into the pit of a valley. A flight of steps and handrails are now in place to make it easier to climb up and down the valley.
The waterfall is at its highest volume of water during the summer. The weather can still be chilly into the month of May, but June can be the best time to visit the area.

Sardasht is one of the Kurdish populated border districts located in the southern West Azerbaijan, neighboring the Kurdistan Province in Northern Iraq. The main language spoken by most of the local population is Kurdish. The capital of Sardasht is the town of Sardasht.
