Marserkis Church
Situated 5km southwest of Urmia near the Band Park, the church is originally named the Marserkis Church. Marserkis is a combination of the two words “Mar” which means “lord” or “master” and “Serkis” which is Greek for Saint George. Based on the architectural style and the records made by the Assyrian historians, the church, which is known to be Saint George’s burial place and thus a Christian shrine, was built during the reign of the Sassanid king Khosro Parviz in the pre-Islamic era by his wife Shirin, on the occasion of Iranian’s victory over the Greeks.
The Marserkis Church is one of the stone structures of the province. The roof and all walls are skillfully and solidly built with stones of irregular shapes. The structure has two sections; the first section includes a relatively short entrance hallway, prayer hall, altar and the surrounding chambers. The second section consists of another hall parallel to the first one, and small chambers connected to the back of the altar.
The interior of both halls are done very plainly in stucco and paint. The ceilings of the halls display arches and vaults in a semi oval shape, reminiscent of the architectural style of the antiquity. Attached to the back of the church is a small area with a chamber and a cellar underneath, which is supposed to be the "Chelleh Khane" of the church.
