Rock of Kazem Khan
Rock of Kazem Khan or Ghirekhlar is a solid flat rock more than 350 meters high with a castle at the very top. The only way to get to the top is a trail 60 meters wide and 500 meters long that has been carved all around the huge rock. Remnants of many structures and buildings made of large cut stones can still be seen at the base of the castle. There used to be a number of marble gravestones by the castle, engraved with beautiful Naskh inscriptions, but they have been missing now for some time. There is an 8m deep well with a 2.5m by 2.5m mouth which was designed to collect the rain for future uses.
During World War I and the invasion of the pillaging Russians, the castle had been a sanctuary for a brave man from Qushchi named Kazem Khan and his comrades, who took refuge in this castle for 9 years. A two story building had also been added to the castle on the orders of Kazem Khan to be used as living quarters for his family and himself. He had set up forging, molding and boat building at the castle, and also made cannons, cartridges, gunpowder and so on.
The castle has only one door which opens to the stone trail. In 7th century AH, the rundown castle of Ghirekhlar was restored on the orders of Hulagu Khan. It is also said that he ordered all his treasures, pillaged from Iraq and other countries, to be collected and moved to the castle to be hidden in a safe place. It is even rumored that Hulagu Khan himself is buried in the castle.
