Stone Gate of Khoy
Once situated on the southeast outskirts of the city, the Stone Gate of Khoy is now swallowed by the urban development projects. The north side of the structure faces the Bazaar of Khoy which symbolizes the old part of the city, but it is surrounded from the three other sides with the new buildings of the modern part.
The Gate was built during the Qajar dynasty as a defensive strategy commonly used in the old cities of the time. Approaching Khoy from the direction of Salmas, the Stone Gate stands as the entrance to the city.
The structure is built with two different construction materials. Bricks have been used for building the north side which runs parallel to the old bazaar, but the south side is built with cut stones in gray or black, laid out in a symmetrical pattern. The brick arch facing the Bazaar is shaped in zigzags, but the south stone arch forms a semicircular shape.
Under the south stone arch, two lions are carved in simple stationary poses on the two sides of the gate. Also, the black and white stones of the south side are alternately finished with two rows of china.
