Three Domes
The Three Domes Tower is situated in an alley branched off the Ostad Barzegar Street in the southeastern part of Urmia. In the past years, the edifice sat isolated and alone on in open area, but with the growing urban development projects in the recent 30 years, the old structure is now surrounded by residential buildings.
The edifice is an anonymous mausoleum with architectural and construction features that attribute its date to the Seljuk dynasty. The date 580 AH can be seen in Kufi transcripts on top of the entrance. In addition, the visible similarities between this edifice and the other mausoleums of the Seljuk period set the date at the 6th century AH.
The Three Domes Mausoleum is built in a cylindrical shape with two different types of construction material. The lower parts are built out of cut gray stones up to a height of 6/3. The rest of the building from there up is made of square bricks.
The edifice is built in two stories. The walls and the main roof of the dome are all in perfect shape. Like all mausoleums of the Seljuk period, the second story of the structure is built on top of the crypt. The ornamentations over the mausoleum’s doorway are unique, embellished with geometrical designs and Kufi transcripts using bits and pieces of stone and stucco.
