Haft Sin

One of the most popular traditions of Iranians during the NowRuz holiday is laying out the Haft Sin or the “Seven 'S's”. A “Spread” or “Tray” signifies daily sustenance and blessing in the ancient Iranian culture. Anything used in the Haft Sin spread is a symbol of birth, blessing and purity.

Senjed (the dried fruit of the oleaster tree): symbolizing rebirth and a new beginning.

Sir (garlic): symbolizing cleanliness, and a cleansing of anything soiled and unclean.

Serkeh (vinegar): symbolizing cleanliness and purity.

Somaq (powdered sumac berries): symbolizing cleanliness and purity.

Samanu (a sweet pudding made from wheat germ): symbolizing the growth of plants, sweetness and joy.

Sabzeh (wheat, barley or lentil sprouts grown in a dish): symbolizing growth and blessing.

Sib (apple): symbolizing freshness, sweet fragrance and a new life.

The Holy Book of Quran as a symbol of spirituality and guidance, a bowl of goldfish as a symbol of beauty and agility, and fragrant and beautiful flowers such as lilies and hyacinths are also usual additions to the Haft Sin table. The tasteful layout and decoration of everything is one of the most important and enjoyable aspects of the Haft Sin, cherished by all Iranians.
